There's loads of interesting stuff on this site.

Go to 'video clips of Bunraku'.

Watch some of the videos.  Preferably all the videos.

Post a response that includes...

What elements of the performances did you expect to see because of your learning today?

Why do you think the performances work well with the puppeteers in sight?

A further website of interest.  A reason for your choice.

  1. I expected the rather "masculine" voice from the assumed female puppet after hearing about some of the predjudices in Baraku. I also expected the movement of the feet to be defined after learning they have a whole puppeteer dedicated to them aswell as the music and chanting that the story is told in. With the puppeteer in sight i found it increased the magic of it as its like they are part of the audience in a way as the puppets get a life of their own.

I chose this because it gives details on every aspect of Banruku, giving a more intimate feel and shows pictures of the narrator, ect and the style of dress they wear.

  2. my opinion:
this is not what i was expecting at all to be very honset. even though i knew how they move and how they were controlled by the three puppeteers but i was amazed by this the skill and tlent that is required to add movement to the bunraku puppets

    to the actual task:
even though i was expect it be like that i was expecting to see the three puppeteers. i was also expecting to hear the shamisen. the main thing i was mainly expecting was watching the three puppeteers moving each body part of the puppet.

i think the puppets work well with the puppeteers becuase you become more interested in the puppets and in a sense it add a magical effect to the bunraku performance. i also think that with seeing the puppeteers in sight i make you fell that each bunraku puppet comes to life when they are in the performance.

  3. What elements of the performances did you expect to see because of your learning today?
From my leanrining today I expected to see three puppeteers controlling the puppets but i did not expect 9 puppeteers on stage at one given time controlling 3 puppets I just thought there would have been a limit to 2 puppets at a time on stage but I was wrong. One thing i did not expect was the way the speaking or the singing went in sync with the music and it reminded of rap music even though i did not understand the whole time i was like are these people rapping or is it the style the speak in. Which gave the performance a diffrent atmosphere because without the means langauge i could understand i just had to depend on the body language and the pace and rythm that kept constantly changing depending on the rhythm which could convey a variety of meanings for me to understand the performnce a little bit better, but the mysteriouness of the whole performance makes my experience better than of those who can understand the language!

Why do you think the performances work well with the puppeteers in sight?
In my opinion I did not think that the performances work well with the puppeters in sight, as i was constantly distrated by the by their faces and i kept trying to see which puppeteer was talking. Then i realised that the speaker was off stage and in a diffrent room from the stage, from time to time i would forget that the puppeteers where there then again i wanted to know how they moved their puppets with such grace and elegance.

Of course, I expected to see the "double triangle" principal in action; as suspected there was the string instrument, the Shamisen, the storyteller, and the puppets, each of which controlled by three puppeteers. The various sections of the stage are also very noticeable, the panel at the front of the stages masking the puppeteers' feet. Also, fitting in with the anti-feminine ideals with the play was a complete lack of female influence aside from those puppets who were women.

Why do you think the performances work well with the puppeteers in sight?

I have to say I'm somewhat torn on this; I agree with Blessing to a degree, at times I found the puppets overshadowed by the puppeteers, though I was actually expecting the brighter garments of the actual puppet to shine above the dark clothing of the trio controlling it; but, no, that wasn't the case. I suppose in theory, the use of puppeteers on stage could ensure the performances work well because it forces us to consider both the nature of the operator; a human being, and the intricacies of the puppet. The constant shadow of a human operator in a way, diffuses the organic nature of the puppeteers into the puppet; bringing more authenticity into each movement.

I chose this website not so much for the gentle introduction to Bunraku itself, but for the detailed pictures of some Bunraku puppets. They really capture the articulation and beauty of such puppets, and the included height measurements will no doubt help us when we make our own.
