A human being is only breath and shadow - Sophocles

In separate posts...
Over the next few weeks...
Each of you...

Post a description of the characters and scenery that you are creating for your Chinese shadow puppetry project.

Post a link to a good, interesting, entertaining, helpful site that you have found on the subject.

Post a comment on why (whether?) you think moral tales, fables, cautionary stories, stories with messages (propoganda?) are well communicated through puppetry.  Why might an audience be inclined to be influenced more by a puppet than a person, after all, there is a person behind the puppet...isn't there?  Why might someone learn more from a shadow than a human?  Might we learn more from a piece with no words than a traditional spoken play?  Might we learn different things?

Post responses to each other's responses.

Team with most/best quality post wins a prize.

They have a human quality but still practically scream scary.

  3. for our groups shadow puppet project i am make the scenary of a mountin which dosent really have mus inspiration as its just a moutin.
the moral to our shadow puppet project is that trust is the key to the opening of the cage.

as i was doing my research on chinesse shadow puppetry i found a really couple of really good website with a lot of information that i found really interesting and very easy to understand
    the links are below :

when i was reading the information on theses site i learnt That the orgin of the shadow puppetry is that Emperor lost his wife and made a cotton puppet of the concubine and painted it. As night fell, he invited the emperor to watch a rear-illuminated puppet show behind a curtain.

    1. I just got to say that the whole 'trust is the key to opening the cage' I find really amusing mostly because of the literal and metaphorical meaning.

    2. I think it's rather 'deep'

    3. liam i ask you what the moral of our story was and you said that to me but it is rather amusing

    5. I worked the moral up with Daniel K and then confirmed it with the group it was a number of options but this seemed the key one to express.

  4. I have also found this other site team, its really interesting learning about legends of shadow puppetry and also the historic significance of Chinese shadow puppetry.

I think the reason an audience may be influenced more by the puppets rather than seeing an actual live performance will be the age range, because children will be more influenced and understand a performance better that has been performed by puppets because children become more engaged, interested and learn more of non-spoken pieces or cartoons instead of watching real people perform, even though there is a person behind the puppet but the children can’t see them so this may lead them to thinking that the puppets are real living things like cartoons and the child becomes influenced by the performance and the story behind it.

We may learn more from a non-spoken piece because we are seeing how it happens, but we may not learn more from it. So I suppose this depends on the actual person because each person learns in different ways. Some learn from being told the story in a spoken way and some learn from just watching a non-spoken piece. From personal experience I sometimes learn better when watching non-spoken pieces than by watching pieces that have been spoken.

But then again to a certain extent we can also learn different things from the Chinese shadow puppet show because each person could see something different because not all people see the same things because one thing could look like or mean something to one person but then could look completely different and mean something completely different to another person.

    1. I like your ideas on each person interpretations the performance in there own way, I think it is sometimes we should hope to acheive with our own piece. It is something which I believe makes any piece of art great. Also your thoughts on the audience that children are enaged becaus of the fantasy of it I think are right. Children find it fun, perhaps we should hope to no only engage but to get older people to find the fun.

    2. i also agree with you liam we need to make our puppet to also keep the children engage in the performance but to try and engage the older people aswell
      good idea smaje :)

  5. m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fqqk9PAwc_g okay so here a link to a video I found trying to locate some music. It shows the end credits to Kung Fu Panda 2, I think it just shows how influential chinese shadow puppetry has been (as the video is based on that style) As it is still being used today.

  6. I'm not entirely sure you can learn more with a play with no words. I think it depends on the person and what you try to express. I can understand certain things from physical theatre but not a lot, also from the videos of Chinese shadow puppets, I struggle to find a message and get absorbed by the performance.

  7. I looked through all the websites my wonderful friends posted and foudn them very useful. I was a little shakey on the detail that was required I found this picture helped;
    http://www.deviantart.com/download/88483673/The_Joker___Shadow_Puppet_by_IsabellasArt.jpg

showed that there very simple in design but with some good detail.

My job is to make a friar sand and a monk.

I think we can learn more from peices of theatre that have no clear colorful images and words because it leaves more to the imagination.

    1. That picture I think really shows how intricate the designs can be. To emphasize that here is this picture; I believe it would take me years and alot of frustration to make something like this. http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1024&bih=499&tbm=isch&tbnid=wnC152tlQKFdUM:&imgrefurl=http://www.puppetmuseum.com/FREECOLL/WWOP2.htm&docid=d9Hv2eqcGVJqxM&imgurl=http://www.puppetmuseum.com/FREECOLL/FREEIMAG/Pb190228-e2.jpg&w=283&h=300&ei=PPWvT6WpK4Kg0QXwv9GQCw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=765&vpy=157&dur=1105&hovh=231&hovw=218&tx=91&ty=187&sig=104167704142691205957&page=1&tbnh=125&tbnw=112&start=0&ndsp=12&ved=1t:429,r:11,s:0,i:122

Okay in this you will see a dragon, with chucks missing from its body. Which seems spooky to me so I included it for me demon. Now on its nose you will see blue, I was unsure if adding colour to shadow puppets would be traditional as they are usually black and white. So after asking Mr Pope who said some creativity is good. Tissue paper was added to my demon the eyes red and other parts yellow and green which I hope makes it resemble a serpent

    1. liam i do like you idea of using tissue paper on the demon because it creates a more scarey looking character and helpp us identify it being the demon

    2. There is also another picture on here, if you can see it shows two people actually performing with the puppets. I thought it would be important to actually see how to do it.

    1. Brilliant, I think you have captured the child friendly image we are trying to achieve by using iconic images for children. Also basing the monkey on Rafiki makes me wonder was be actually based on the monkey king.

    2. i totally agree with you jamie and also you liam

    3. Actually me ameigos rafiki is a babboon so he would not be based upon the monkey king directly but may have slight simularitys to that of the money kings... Though I'm pretty sure rafiki was a wise old healer and nothing more but you know walt Disney liked adding sneeky things into his movies

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cd2zwejhTFk I stumbled across the video, it shows some Chinese musical that I believe relates to shadow puppets. The drawback of this is it brings to mind happy images and does not have the same tone as our story. Enjoy!

  11. I believe that with old myths, legends and fables. Morals would acheive better effect, mainly as it breaths life into old stories. The use of puppets give children a chance to learn the stories in a fun and amusing way. Whilst drawing adults in to remind them of lessons they may have forgotten
